Hackney Well Dressings 2013 (part 2)

On 17th August 2013 this year's Well Dressings were blessed by the retired Rev Quarton.  The rain held off and refreshments were served afterwards.  The League of Friends is very grateful to all members of the team of Well Dressers in Hackney and thank them for a warm welcome on the day.

The Well Dressing event for 2013 at Hackney near Matlock starts on 17th August at 12 noon.  All donations this year are to support the League of Friends in their work at The Whitworth Hospital and Orchard Cottage.

Please make your way to the top of Holt Road on foot (off Greenaway Lane) on Saturday, August 17, where there will be a blessing of the wells performed by the retired Reverend Quarton.  There will also be a bric–a–brac stall and refreshments on offer.   Further details by clickin...

AGM 2013 pictures

The League of Friends AGM took place in the evening of 24th May 2013.  The speaker was Pam Liversidge, who became Sheffield's first Master Cutler in 2011.  Pam (centre)  is pictured with Diana Dakin, MHLOF Chair, and Enid Tatlow of The Whitworth Hospital Secretarial staff.  Each year we are indebted to Enid for her support.

Stu, Jonny and Coops set off on their charity walk from Darley Dale Cricket Club to Lord's Cricket Ground in London on 16th February 2013.

In celebration of 150 years of Darley Dale Cricket Club, funds raised will be split three ways between Matlock Hospitals League of Friends, Cancer Research and the Cricket Club.  Help them to raise as much as possible on their 150 mile trek from Darley Dale to London by visiting:

150 miles for 150 years! Cricketing trio take on charity challenge

Three cricket-loving team mates are swapping grass for tarmac to walk 150 miles to Lords to raise money for Darley Dale Cricket Club (DDCC), Cancer Research UK and the Matlock Hospitals League of Friends.

The trio from Matlock, school teacher Jonny Shaw (26), university lecturer Stuart Taylor (34) and IT systems engineer Jon Cooper (34) will embark on their foot blistering voyage at 9am on Saturday 16 February in celebration of the club’s 150th anniversary.

Christmas 2012

On Tuesday 18th December 2012 members and guests held their annual Christmas Dinner at The Whitworth Hospital.  As is customary, we were looked after very well by staff and all those present complimented the quality of the meal.

Chairman, Di Dakin and Secretary Pam Wildgoose said a few words and a small raffle was held.  Tokens of our appreciation were presented to the staff.  Once again, thank you for making this an enjoyable event.

Brass Band Concert 15.07.2012

On 15h July Darley Dale Brass Band performed at the Darley Cricket Club.  An auction and raffle raised a very welcome £533 for League of Friends funds.

Darley Dale Brass Band (particularly Keith Sheldon), Adrian Fidler (Auctioneer), Darley Dale Cricket Club and many local businesses are due great thanks since without them, this event could not have taken place.

Robert Young awarded The Order of Mercy

Mr Robert Young of Matlock Hospitals League of Friends has been awarded the Order of Mercy, a prestigious medal, for his wonderful voluntary service over many years in the community. The awards ceremony took place at The Mansion House, in the City of London today, in the presence of The Lady Mayoress of London and the Sheriff of the City, and many other distinguished guests.

At a well attended and enjoyable meeting held at The Presentation Convent in Matlock members of The League appreciated a wonderful talk by Andrew Pugh MBE on his life, entitled "Reach for the Heights".  It covered his development of the Heights of Abraham and subsequent cable car systems all over the world.  He also looked forward to further developments on Masson Hill.
