Darley Birth Centre - Letter from Dept of Health #2

April 25, 2012

A further response from the Department of Health can be viewed by clicking here

We considered the earlier response to be unsatisfactory since it merely described the procredure that had taken place over the previous 10 months or so and had therefore tried again to get a proper explanation.

Darley Birth Centre - Letter from Dept of Health

March 22, 2012
The response from Andrew Lansley' office can be viewed by clicking here

We had written to the Secretary of State for Health in January 2012 and asked him to justify the closure of Darley Birth Centre, but the response merely details the procedure leading up to closure.  Of course we were very much aware of the process over the last 10 months.

Darley Birth Centre - January 2012

January 30, 2012
In December 2011 the PCT Cluster voted to close Darley Birth Centre. This was followed by the County Council Improvement and Scrutiny Committee's decision not to refer the case to the Secretary of State for Health.

Since then The Matlock Hospitals League of Friends has been considering whether any further legal options are open to us to fight this decision but it is with regret that we find there are no more avenues open to us.  We have written to the Secretary of State ourselves and will inf...

January 10, 2012
The League's long serving Secretary, Pam Wildgoose, picked up a Matlock Mercury New Year Honour on Friday 6th January 2012.  The event, hosted by Mercury Editor Amanda Hatfield was held in the Imperial Rooms, Matlock.

The yearly awards are issued to recognise the great contribution recipients have made to the community.  Pam thanked the Matlock Mercury for its support of the Birth Centre campaign and of course took the opportunity to ask everyone present to become a member of Derbyshire Commun...

Improvement & Scrutiny Committee (Derbyshire County Council)

December 19, 2011
Very sorry to report that the I&S Committee at Derbyshire County Council voted today *not* to refer the closure of Darley Birth Centre to the Secretary of State for Health.

Mark Todd and David Sharp took questions from the committee, mostly on the issues of the proposed savings and arrangements for ante and post-natal care after the closure. Reports from the Government Gateway organisation and the National Clinical Advisory Panel also seemed to help the committee understand and decide on the i...

PCT Board Decision - Darley Birth Centre

December 7, 2011
The meeting was attended by around 15 PCT Board members. David Sharp (PCT CEO) thanked the campaign groups for their input to the Review and indicated that it had all been carefully considered. Although the board meeting is conducted in public, we were not able to speak at it.

However, Mr Sharp's recommendation to the PCT Board was unchanged and that closure was the right thing given the evidence, lack of support from the GPs and financial constraints. A short discussion on a number of points ...

New furniture and bay refurbishment at Whitworth Hospital

November 29, 2011
In 1986 whilst the nation was enjoying the royal wedding of Andrew and Fergie and Madonna asked us to “Open Your Heart”, Birchover Ward at the Whitworth Hospital quietly opened its doors to patients from Matlock and surrounding area.  Since then the ward has had many improvements many funded by Matlock Hospitals League of Friends and this year the League has celebrated Birchover Ward's 25th Birthday with the presentation of new furniture for the conservatory.

League of Friends Chair Diana ...

Improvement & Scrutiny Committee (People) meeting 17.11.11

November 29, 2011
The ISC heard a renewed presentation from the PCT at the meeting.   The ISC’s major concerns prior to the meeting had been:

(i) Lack of concrete plans on ante and post-natal care if Darley was to close
(ii) Lack of breakdown of how the PCT arrived at their suggested saving

There was a small amount of extra detail on the ante and post natal care, but nothing fresh on the costings and it is fair to say that the committee was not at all happy with that.  The PCT had provided a paper at the eleven...
